Cardinal Mahony likens Arizona immigration bill to Nazi, Communist practices – LINK

Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony lambasted legislation passed Monday by Arizona lawmakers that would crack down on illegal immigrants, likening it to “German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques” that compelled people to turn each other in.

“The Arizona legislature just passed the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law,” he wrote on his blog. “The tragedy of the law is its totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources. That is not only false, the premise is nonsense.”

I couldn’t say it any better than Cardinal Mahony. *Redacted statement. See comments for reasoning.
I keep hoping for the day when people will try to look at the real issues facing our community rather than fear mongering. It is a fools hope, I know.

I’m so jaded on people.

  1. I think the Cardinal was referring to this section of the bill when making that Nazi comment:”FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THEPERSON’S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).”That doesn’t sound anything like what happened during the Third Reich. In fact, people should be offended by that comparison and disown it as it cheapens the entire Holocaust experience. Likening actions like the legislature’s passage of this bill to the actions that lead the extermination of 17 million people (including 6 million Jews) is just he lamest form of comparison there is. People do that shit because they know that Nazism was evil and if they can draw a relationship between whatever they disagree with and Nazism then there side of the argument is irrefutable. Just like when the Tea Party walks around with signs that have Obama sporting a Hitler-stache. Also, I have trouble accepting arguments put forth by people belonging to the upper religious order of child fucking scofflaws. With all that said this bill really is just red-meat for righties and I don’t support it.

  2. When I stated, “I couldn’t say it any better…” I was referring to this statement” “The Arizona legislature just passed the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law.”However, point taken. Recalling the imagery of Nazism is as cheap and disgusting a political ploy as painting all immigrants as criminals intent on the disruption of society in order to induce fear in the community.
